He was born in 1925 in Hydra to local parents and was the son of a restaurateur. He remained in Hydra until 1937. After his studies at the 1st High School, his family settled in Piraeus, initially in the city center and after the Occupation in Gallipoli. He took his first painting lessons in 1940 from the German artist and wood engraver Klaus Frieslander. During the same period, he met Nikos Hatzikyriakos-Ghikas and Dimitris Pikionis. After graduating from the six-form high school, he studied law, but left it after a short period of time. During the last year of the Occupation, he was admitted to ASKT, from which he graduated in 1949. He had studied under Dimitrios Biskini, Pavlos Mathiopoulos and Konstantinos Parthenis. Later, thanks to a scholarship, he completed his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Paris (1953-1956), where he was taught copper engraving .
Tetsis formed a personal understanding of expressionism. His works include scenes of everyday life, portraits, landscapes, but also still life. In his works, a significant concern for colors and light can be seen. In addition to painting, Tetsis was engaged in engraving as well as creating murals in churches and public buildings.
He was awarded on 29/02/2016 with the Yiannis Moralis award, which was established for the first time in 2016. He died on March 5, 2016 in Athens, at the age of 91.
- Lithography is a printing technique which was invented around 1798 by A. Alois Senefelder, based on the fact that water and fats are never mixed.
- The subject or representation is drawn with greasy chalk on stone (porous limestone) or tin plate and then dried. When water runs on the designed surfaces, the greasy ink “catches” only in the places that are engraved and not in the wet stone.
